Kite Safety Precautions
Kites are great fun, but please understand that they can harm both you and other people.
Please review the basic precautions below and remember that you are responsible for your actions when flying.
- Learn to be a safe kite flier -

Never fly during or near electrical storms! Even if they sound distant. |
![]() |
Keep a safe distance from trees, both in front and behind. Trees that are too close behind will degrade wind quality and make flying more difficult. Trees in front or to the side may catch and damage your kite. |
|

Keep a good distance from nearby or overhead power lines. You are placing yourself at great risk of electrocution. Power lines can also be badly damaged by your actions and flying could be banned at that location. |

Airports, small airfields or glider clubs are NOT the place to fly kites! Go somewhere else that's safer for everyone. |
|
![]() |
Avoid flying near people. Kites can move fast and cause injury to spectators. Be responsible. Kite flying lines are capable of causing severe cuts to the skin. Keep the kite high and away from people until they pass. If you lose control, SHOUT a warning to anyone nearby. |

Avoid flying too close to roads. Kites can distract vehicle drivers and cause accidents. THINK about where you are flying. |
|
![]() |
Avoid flying near animals. Kites can frighten dogs. Some dogs will chase kites relentlessly and have been known to completely destroy them! Keep the kite high and under control until the animal is gone. |

Unless you are a very experienced flier, avoid exceeding the kite's maximum stated wind range. Kites are faster and more difficult to control in strong winds. There is a greater potential for damage to the kite. |
